Pelvic Inflammatory Disease

PID is caused by untreated infections such as chlamydia and gonorrhea. PID leads to nearly 225,000 hospitalizations every year in the United States, and about 1 out of 7 women who are able to reproduce have had treatment for PID. With each recurrent episode of PID, the chances of becoming infertile more than doubles. PID causes infertility by causing scarring of the fallopian tubes.

PID and Infertility

PID per woman infected with cervical gonorrhea:
40% if not treated
0% if adequately treated

Percentage of women who become infertile after each episode of PID:
1st - 11%
2nd - 23%
3rd - 54%

PID is more likely to affect women who have multiple sex partners who have a partner with multiple sex partners, who have a family history of PID, who recently had an IUD inserted, or who are in the first 5 days of their menstrual cycle.
